            JGV - Club Formation
JGHV members there have been changes made by the JGHV which impacts the apprentice judge program in North America.  Apprentice judges MUST apprentice at least 1-VJP, 1- HZP and 1-VGP in an out of group test (Chapters of GNA are not considered out of group) to become certified as a performance judge VR.  Due to the lack of other groups within North America and the need to support other JGHV breeds, their owners, handlers, supporters for the testing, training and education JGV-(Clubs) are being formed.

Requirements:    1-Petition the JGHV Executive Committee to form a JGV-(Clubs).  2- A paid membership of approximately 60 members, within this membership 4 or more JGHV Judges VR’s.  3- A payment of €300.00 made to the JGHV at the time that the formation petition is submitted to the Executive Committee for consideration.

Purpose:  To provide testing, training and education for all association of the JGHV within North America.  To work in concert with of all breed clubs and other JGHV associations in North America.  It is recognized to affect this purpose there must be 2 or more JGHV associations within any local area. That would provide “Out-of-Group” experiences and opportunities for all breeds to be tested with the least possible travel and expenses to judges and handlers.   Further it is hoped that a JGV-(Club) will be formed in as many different geographical locations that can support a minimum membership of 60 members.    The overall purpose is to keep administration, travel and cost to a minimum while testing and training are accomplished at the most local level.

Membership:  By way of this letter this JGV-(Clubs) solicits your membership.   With a payment of $5.00(make checks payable to JGV-(Clubs) you will be counted towards the required formation membership.   Depending on the responses for membership and the geographical locations of these members more than one JGV-Club could and hopefully will be formed.  These first club(s) will be the catalyst to form other JGV-Clubs as minimum requirements can be meet.

Formation of JGV- Club:  Upon meeting the minimum JGHV requirements for Club(s) the membership will be canvassed as to the Naming of the Club, Election of Officers, Annual membership dues and any other organizational requirements prior to petitioning the Executive Committee of the JGHV.

Send formation dues of $5.00 to:

Clarification on Intervention - No Intervention During Retrieves

Drag; Handler Draws Attention to Self Through Praise
            VGPO: § 43(1)
            Question:
During the furred game drag with rabbit at the VGP, the dog can be seen returning and carrying the rabbit. During the last 50 m in front of the handler, the handler begins clapping his flat hand against his thigh for a total of 8 times while at the same time walking back aIs his objection justified?

            Answer:
The answer is most definitely negative.
When a game carrying dog approaches its handler, and the handler does not somehow draw the dog’s attention to himself by hand clapping or praise or walking back and forth, he shows little understanding of a dog’s psyche. The dog considers the game not “his” quarry but “our” quarry. When the dog sees strangers and other dogs, and maybe does not even see his handler among the crowd, the dog rightfully fears for “our” game. For this reason, it is not only permissible but appropriate that the handler shows himself to the dog with praise by hand or verbal signals. This is different from the situation where the dog does not work correctly, for example by dropping the game or stopping midway with the game in its fang. When, in such a case, the handler attempts to influence the dog by hand or verbal signals – even without a verbal fetch command – it is considered an intervention which will result in the predicate “insufficient” for furred and feathered game drags and the manner of retrieve.

            VZPO HZP §§ 39, 38
            Furred Game Drag, Retrieving
            Question
On the furred game drag, a dog is coming back to the handler after picking up the rabbit. About 50 meters in front of where the handler is waiting, the dog stops and puts down the rabbit. The dog sniffs the rabbit and then begins to play. Several times, the dog throws the rabbit into the air, and for the time being makes no attempt to bring it back. The handler is now visibly nervous. The senior judge instructs the handler to make himself noticeable, and to call the dog.  After being called by the handler, the dog does bring the game, but only hesitantly, and the handler must take several steps to the dog in order to gain possession of the rabbit. The dog does not sit while delivering.
How is the described performance to be evaluated?
            Answer
The dog must independently retrieve, without handler intervention during misbehavior by the dog. § 38 (13)
The senior judge did not have the authority to instruct the handler to drastically intervene in what was taking place! Such assistance is not permitted. The co-judges must also react here!
The dog cannot pass the test!

Clarification on Steadiness to Wing, Shot, Fall for VGP

From Byron Beaton (10.06.2011 e-mail to Mike Fortner)

I want to be sure that when we use the words Must and Should in reference to our testing regulations they are not misinterpreted by some handlers and judges. That situation become a catastrophe for us in 2006 right after the wording in the VZPO Manner of Retrieve subjects was revised and many judges went with a literal Pass or Fail evaluation of a dogs retrieving work.... the regulations did not allow for Grey areas! This was our interpretation of what was printed in the updated regulations we had just received.
So- a little clarification regarding what JGHV Director of Testing, Uli Augstein, related to me when I talked with him about steadiness to flush and shot while at the business meetings in Germany last March.

A VGP dog is expected to be obedient!

The handler "should" not have to use his influence to steady the dog and the dog "should" not move towards flushed or shot game until it is released by the handler.

As Mike has pointed out, this includes the flush, the shot, and the fall of the bird.
Obviously, a dog that stays steady...or only moves a step or two or even lays downs without handler influence would be rated higher than a dog that chased after game.
Judges would use their discretion to determine a rating for a dog that exhibited some degree of chasing or required handler influence to control it. While moving towards flushed or shot game, or handler influence, will usually result in a lower rating, it is not necessarily an automatic failure of the steadiness subjects.
Thanks for bringing this to the attention of the handlers Mike. It's important for them to know that their dog "must" be steady to receive a top score and that the overall evaluation includes the flushing, shooting, and fall of the shot bird.

Apprentice Judge Changes - Out of Group Requirement

In late June we were informed by JGHV that apprenticing at “out of Chapter” test within GNA would no longer count for JGHV’s “out of group” requirement.  We were informed that the wording “Chapter” should not have been included in the English translation of the JGHV Association on Judgeship Regulations.
Group North America protested this regulation change, and presented a case that demonstrated that even though there are now several JGHV member clubs in North America they did test the number of dogs, nor hold enough test to adequately meet GNA Apprentices “out of Group” requirement.
JGHV for the most part disregarded the presented data, and is requiring us to follow the regulations as is for any Apprentice registered after January 1st, 2012.  They are allowing any Apprentice registered prior to January 1st, 2012 to apprentice both VJP’s within GNA, but must apprentice one HZP and one VGP in a different group.  All Apprentices registered after January 1st, 2012 must apprentice an out of group VJP, HZP and VGP.
With this being said, I have already been in contact with our fellow  JGHV member clubs here in North America, and have begun to develop a cooperative with them for you.
What I ask of you is that if you are in your 3rd or 4th year of your apprentice program that you contact me right away so that I can help coordinate with you an apprentice opportunity in one of our fellow JGHV member clubs fall tests.  If you have already apprenticed at an “out of Chapter” HZP and VGP you will have to apprentice at another “out of Group” test, and GNA will reimburse travel and lodging expenses for these additional tests.
If you are not in the 3rd or 4th year of your apprentice program then I ask that you don’t immediately contact me, nor contact any Test Directors of other JGHV member clubs about apprenticing.  Once we are able to make sure we have all Apprentices that are in their 3rd or 4th year accommodated, I will then gladly help all others with any out of group apprenticing needs as well.
It is very important that we do not bombard these other JGHV member club Test Directors with multiple requests, and that we approach this with them in an orderly manner! Thus the reason why I am helping to coordinate things for this fall.
Thanks for your time and I’ll be in touch again soon!

Regional Representative's - Wild West Chapter
The Regional Representative Program has been developed to give Chapter members a more local contact for training information and help. Each state in the Wild West Chapter has a volunteer coordinator. He or She will be the chapters main contact point and if the state is large enough, we will have named another coordinator, who can help cover the distance gap that may occur.
The volunteers of the Wild West Chapter regional rep's will be the first contact to help find out what is going on in each region. It will be their task to help members meet DD people in their state, help arrange local training days, point out local training areas, and areas to find or purchase game to train with and be able to provide valuable advice in training and testing of the DD. As well as keep the Chapter Board up to date with current news in each region.
The Wild West Chapter wishes each and every volunteer representative all the best in this new venture and Thank all of you very much for volunteering and making this plan come alive. We appreciate your dedication to keeping the breed pure and our members knowledgeable about the exceptional breed they have chosen.

            Picture
At the WWC meeting in Feb we voted to present a Breeders Award starting in the year 2010. It was decided we would adapt a formula already used by other Chapters to present the Award. The formula used puts emphasis on test scores of dogs tested in VJP  and HZP divided by the number of dogs registered in the  litter.

            1. A vom Bärenwald - 119.4

            2. C vom Worrellhaus - 114.8

            3. M vom Orion - 96.6

            4. B vom Cabin Creek - 88.4

            5. D vom Mauntinhoum - 70.2

            6. B vom Wilde - 67.0

            7. N vom Orion - 55.1

            8. B vom Red-Rock - 52.9

            9. A vom Cedar-View 49.8

Congratulations to Scott Doxey and vom Bärenwald for recieving the 2010 WWC Breeders Award.

Raffi Barbarian made a very generous offer of personally making this silver ring to be presented to the 2010 Breeders Award winner. You can see by the pictures that this is a stunning ring that will last a lifetime. Thank you Raffi !!

            New Vice Chairman
Some recent changes in the Wild West Chapter Board, Jason Wilde has stepped down as Vice Chairman to be able to concentrate on Test Director tasks. At our Chapter Meeting Feb 25th 2011, Zac White was nominated and voted in on a unanimous decision. Congratulations Zac!
For those of you who do not know Zac, he has been a member of the VDD for 4 years, has owned 2 DD's, and has ran through VJP (2),HZP,VGP. He has contributed alot to the chapter in regards to training days, 2010 Armbruster preparations and marshall duties. He is dedicated to seeing the breed and club grow in a positive direction and has always been willing to help the "other guy" and those new to the DD.

Another apprentice has entered the judgeship
Jeff Lowe is a new addition to the judge list. He has finished up all his training and is ready for action. Jeff will be a great addition to the judge roster and will continue to aid the chapter in achieving our testing and judging goals. Congrats Jeff!
We as a chapter are still in need of judges. If you are able to become a judge, please begin your apprenticeship. We have some new breeders and low on judges, at some point in time we may run into some testing snags if we can't sign up more judges. If you are interested and do not know where to turn, please contact us.

            25 Year Member Award
The Wild West Chapter awarded Scott Hegestrom with the 25 Year Member Award. This is a huge accomplishment and well deserved. Congrats Scott and Thank You!

            VGP High Score
Congratulations to Brandon Park and his dog Akira vom Red-Rock for the accomplishment of the highest score VGP in the Wild West Chapter! Great Work!

            State Representatives
The Chapter would like to appoint State Representatives for each state in the chapter. Perhaps more per state if it is large enough. We have had a few volunteers from Washington, Utah and Idaho, but that is all. The rep will be the contact person for new pup owners in the area, they will also assist in training days and helping organize events and so forth in thier area. Please contact me for more info or

            Spring Newsletter

Hello all, my name is Chazz Holt. I am the new business manager for the Wild West Chapter. I became a member in 2007 with the purchase of my first DD. I have learned a lot about the DD and continue to learn more through experiences in hunting, testing, training and meeting new people throughout the organization. I plan to meet more and learn more through training days, meetings and test events. My goal is to help the chapter and GNA grow, along with informing new members of how to find help and information on a breed they are unfamiliar with. This is a first for the chapter to participate in the newsletter as well as a few others to speak of later. There is a chapter website, accessible from the GNA website or go to www.wildwestchapter.com. There is merchandise for sale, as well as pictures and information on upcoming and past events. If you have any questions or suggestions to help our chapter, please feel free to contact me. Fishin4food711@hotmail.com

The WW Chapter hosts the 2010 Armbruster in Boise Idaho this September! We are excited to host this prestigious event and hope many will enter as well as come to spectate this wonderful breed in action. We are still in need of volunteers and donations in all aspects of the event, from merchandise, to field help, so please feel free to contact me with any information or if you want to participate. Matt Norman is putting together the prize and auction items, so please feel free to contact him with information on that particular subject.
coldwatercanyondd@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you there, so get through the VJP and on the road to Armbruster!

The WW Chapter held a breed show in North Ogden Utah Feb 6th. The show was hosted by Steve Fields and dogs were presented, judged and qualified for the breeding register. The first California VJP was held in Gorman, CA on March 6th-7th.Test Coordinator Bob Worrell and Test Director Shane Loveland did a great job putting the test together. It was a good weekend with good rabbits. 9 dogs passed along with a Duetsch Langhaar and Pudel Pointer from California. VJP testing continues on with Boise Idaho. Joe Kelly was test director and coordinator, 22 dogs were tested and passed. Malta Idaho is just around the corner with 25 dogs testing as well as another WW Chapter first…A Reno Nevada test hosted and coordinated by Bo Waller. And finally the chapter concludes with another first, Training Days in American Fork Utah and Malta Idaho put together by Chazz Holt, Zac White, Cal Bambrough and Utah was hosted by Matt Jones. We plan to have more of these training days as handler’s progress on to HZP and VGP too.

There is Armbruster information included in this newsletter as well as available on the GNA and WW chapter sites. Test scores along with pictures and information are on the chapter site as well. Good luck and happy training to all!
